A heavy industry that builds ships and offshore structures from steel. In the part-production stage, cutting hull parts from large steel plates — Plate Nesting — appears as 2D Irregular Nesting. It shares the overlap-free placement core with apparel and sheet metal, but its manufacturability constraints are tougher: cutting path, bridges and common-line cuts that join parts into a single pass, and bevel preparation for downstream welding must all be reflected in the layout.
